Degrees of Success
As a graduate degree holder you would on average make over twice as much as someone
armed only with a high school diploma. While the high school graduate can finish
their working lives with a record of $1.2 million, a holder of a master's degree
can make over double that with $2.5 million. Professional and doctoral degree holders
can boast sums of $4.4 million and $3.4 million respectively. Not only is the difference
substantial, but it is increasing. In 1975, holders of graduate degrees made 1.8
times that of those with only high school diplomas, while by 1999 that figure had
grown to 2.6.
