Nurse your future with a NURSING degree from one of these online or campus-based schools.

Nursing positions outnumber every other occupation in the health care industry. Registered nurses (RNs), treat and educate patients, and give emotional support to patients and their families of patients. RNs also record patients' medical information and perform a variety of standard procedures, including taking vital signs, drawing blood, and also administering shots and other medications. RNs also operate medical machinery and follow up with patients.

There are many specialties within nursing. There are ambulatory care nurses, critical care nurses, emergency care nurses, hospice nurses, and holistic nurses among nursing specialties. There are also RNs such as dermatology nurses who specialize in the treatment of a particular organ or body system. Some nurses concentrate on a particular age group. For example, pediatric nurses only work with children.

In order to build a career as a nurse, applicants must pass a national licensing test called the NCLEX-RN. There are three educational paths to becoming a registered nurse. One is to obtain a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Another is to get an associates degree in nursing. And finally, there are diploma programs. Advanced nursing positions require a master's degree.

Nursing is expected to continue growing faster than average until the year 2014. This growth is fueled by an expanding industry as well as technological advances in patient care. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, RNs with a bachelor's degree have better prospects than those without.

Because the demand for nurses is so high, many hospitals offer signing bonuses and other incentives. The median salary for a nurse in 2004 was $52,330. A small percentage of nurses earned as much as $74,760 that year. Along with a good salary, many employers offer flexible work schedules, childcare and education benefits.
